Reconciliation Week

Rec

Briar Road Public School kicked of our Reconciliation Week celebrations with a whole school assembly to acknowledge the significant events that make up the Reconciliation Week dates, the 2025 Reconciliation Week theme and National Sorry Day. A range of performances and certificates were celebrated to acknowledge the fantastic work that reflects the tremendous efforts of reconciliation in our school.

Throughout our assembly, students and community were reminded of the importance of the 1967 Referendum and The 1992 Mabo Decision shaping reconciliation in Australia. Students and school community were also reminded of the roles that the amazingly wonderful Faith Bandler and Eddie Koiki Mabo played respectively in contributing to these significant events and how many events have since taken place to encourage reconciliation because of their leadership.

This was evident in the Walk for Reconciliation on the Harbour Bridge in the year 2000 as part of the Corrobboree Festival. Thousands of people gathered on the day of the Harbour Bridge Walk and has been one of the largest political demonstrations in Australia that has helped promote the concept of Reconciliation in Australia. Students will be inspired by the 2025 theme of; Bridging Now to Next to strengthen their knowledge of how understanding these events will inspire the next generation to continue the work of reconciliation.
